How to Calculate Variations
Candidate moves, calculating to the end, and the mistakes that waste the effort
Most advice about tactics stops at "solve more puzzles". That builds pattern recognition, which is necessary, but it leaves out the actual mechanics of calculating — how to work through a position when the answer is not immediately obvious.
Calculation is a procedure, and most amateur errors come from skipping steps in it rather than from lacking raw ability.
Start With Candidate Moves
Before calculating anything, list the moves worth considering. Usually two to four. The point is to decide what you are going to examine before you start examining it.
The common failure is fixating on the first interesting move you notice and calculating it for two minutes, never asking whether a better candidate existed. Players regularly find a good move, play it, and discover afterwards there was a winning one they never looked at.
In sharp positions, force yourself to include the forcing options — checks, captures, threats — even when they look wrong. They are the moves most likely to be underestimated, and they are also what your opponent will play against you.
Calculate One Line to the End
Pick a candidate and follow it until the position is quiet enough to judge. Then come back to the start and take the next one.
What breaks calculation is jumping between lines. You calculate three moves of one variation, notice something in another, switch, lose track of the first, come back and start over. This burns clock and produces no reliable conclusion.
Finish the line. If it turns out badly, that is a result — you have eliminated a candidate, which is progress.
Always Ask What They Play
The single most common calculation error is assuming the opponent cooperates. You find a sequence where every one of their replies is the one that loses, and you play it — and they play the move you did not consider.
At each step of a line, ask what their best reply is, not their most natural one. Particularly check whether they have a check, a capture, or a counter-threat that changes everything. Most collapsed combinations die to an in-between move that was never examined.
This costs time and it is the difference between calculation that works and calculation that feels productive.
How Deep Is Deep Enough?
Deep enough that the position at the end is one you can evaluate. That is the real criterion, and it varies enormously — a forced sequence might need ten moves, a quiet position two.
Stopping in the middle of a tactical melee and guessing is where the errors live. If the position at the end of your calculation still has hanging pieces and pending threats, you have not finished; you have stopped.
Conversely, calculating twelve moves deep in a quiet position is wasted effort. When nothing is forcing, judgement is more useful than calculation.
Practising It
Calculation improves with deliberate practice, not just volume. Take a complex puzzle and work it out fully in your head before moving anything — no trying moves on the board to see what happens.
Then write down or say out loud the line you calculated before checking. This is uncomfortable and it exposes exactly where your calculation is imprecise, which is the information you need.
Doing this with five positions attentively is worth more than fifty solved by trial and error.
