How the Puzzle Modes Work
Every puzzle on ChessOnyx comes from a real game and carries a difficulty rating plus tactical themes — from forks, pins and skewers to mating nets and endgame technique. The five training modes cover different ways to practice:
Random
Random deals you an unfiltered position from the full database of over 3 million puzzles. You never know the theme or difficulty in advance — just like in a real game, where nobody tells you a tactic is on the board.
Rated
Rated is the heart of the trainer: every solved or failed puzzle adjusts your personal puzzle rating, and the next position is chosen to match it. Puzzles stay challenging but solvable, and your rating history shows exactly how your tactical strength develops.
Training
Training lets you pick one specific motif — mate in two, discovered attack, endgame technique and many more — and drill exactly that pattern with no clock and no rating at stake.
Survival Mode
Survival Mode is about speed under pressure: solve as many puzzles as you can against the clock (3 or 5 minutes) or under survival rules, where three mistakes end the run. The difficulty climbs as your streak grows.
Match Puzzles
Match Puzzles are generated from your own imported games: positions where you or your opponent missed a tactic become personal training material — there is no more instructive puzzle than one you failed to spot in your own game.
A free account is enough to keep a puzzle rating: your progress and your per-theme strengths and weaknesses are tracked automatically and shown in your profile.
